Tradition in Transition: Russian Icons in the Age of the Romanovs

September 28, 2007 - January 05, 2008

Forty-five sacred devotional objects, many made from precious metals and stones, told the story of Russia’s most emblematic artistic expression – the icon – during 300 years of Romanov rule (1613-1918). The selection illustrated the impact on icon painting of Russia’s increasing contact with Western culture throughout the Romanov epoch. Organized by the Hillwood Museum and Gardens, Washington D.C.  Tour by International Art & Artists.
