Train Day at the Museum

Celebrate LASM's railroad roots with Train Day at the Museum, a special family-friendly event on Saturday, April 18, from 10 AM to 2 PM. In partnership with the Greater Baton Rouge Model Railroaders, visitors of all ages are invited to explore the world of trains and transportation through hands-on activities, model railroad demonstrations, exhibitions, planetarium shows, and live steam trains. The celebration takes place inside LASM’s historic home, the former Yazoo & Mississippi Valley Railroad depot, which marked its 100th anniversary last year.

Guests can operate model trains with one simple button, including beloved Thomas & Friends sets and classic toy trains. Additionally, experienced hobbyists will demonstrate other detailed layouts in multiple gauges. Visitors can also explore a large display of train models, browse model train vendors, get more information on the hobby, and enter for exciting door prizes. Visitors will also have the chance to see live steam trains in action, offering a unique look at miniature steam-powered railroading.

“This is a great opportunity for families and friends to experience the fun of the model railroad hobby!” said Clay Fourrier, President of the Greater Baton Rouge Model Railroaders. “The color, action and nostalgic feeling of the many operating displays and expansive train collection on view will provide a look at why this more than a century old pastime is still viable for today’s children and adults,”

Several partners will participate, including the Train Collectors Association Louisiana Chapter and Operation Lifesaver, who will provide insights on railroading history, train collecting, and railroad safety.

Various experiences will take place throughout the museum, including:

  • Operating steam train layouts in the Bert S. Turner Family Atrium
  • Model train displays in the galleries
  • Hands-on experiences in LASM’s STEAM Station
  • Train-themed video programming in the Adelie Brent Auditorium

Admission to Train Day is included with regular museum admission and is free for LASM members, offering families and train enthusiasts a full day of interactive fun. Event admission includes full access to the museum and shows in the Irene W. Pennington Planetarium, including America’s Musical JourneyInto America’s Wild, and National Parks Adventure

LASM invites the community to celebrate the museum’s architectural history and the enduring fascination with trains through this engaging event.
