Studio Saturday with Mike Weary

LASM invites the community to Studio Saturday on Saturday, April 25, 2026, from 10 AM – 12 PM, featuring local artist Mike Weary. This hands-on workshop gives participants a unique chance to explore painting techniques and self-reflection under the guidance of Weary, a self-taught South Louisiana painter whose work explores the lived experiences of African Americans and the complexities of the American South.

Attendees will experiment with Weary’s painting upside down technique, using materials like oil, rusted iron, and patinated copper, while learning expressive palette knife methods that leave visible marks of labor and emotion. Themes of resilience, memory, and identity guide the session. All supplies are provided—just bring curiosity and an open mind.

Participants can also tour Weary’s exhibition, The Rise of the House of Weary, in LASM’s Main Gallery upstairs, where he will share insights into his narrative approach and creative process. Registration is $35 for LASM members and $45 for non-members.
