Studio Saturday: Second Nature Art Workshops with Chase Mullen

May's Studio Saturday Art Workshops is on Saturday, May 11 featuring local artist Chase Mullen. Mullen will hold two workshops in conjunction with LASM’s exhibition, Second Nature: Artworks by Chase Mullen, located in the Soupçon Gallery: one for children ages 8-13 at 10 AM and one for adults ages 14+ at 1 PM.

Chase Mullen's creations for his first museum exhibition Second Nature explore the intricate ecology of the southern region, particularly Louisiana. Using acrylics on pristine white wooden panels, Mullen's art skillfully merges ecology with surrealism. “I am excited to provide deeper insights into my artistic journey and inspirations,” states Chase Mullen. “Utilizing the resources and beautiful venue of Soupçon Gallery at LASM, I look forward to sharing my work and process with the vibrant Baton Rouge art community.”

The morning class, designed for children ages 8-13, will be a beginner’s drawing session with artist Chase Mullen, where students will learn how to turn alphabet letters into animals. Each student will receive a sketchbook, with drawing and coloring supplies provided to share with other participants. The morning workshop will be from 10 AM – 12 PM in the Soupçon Gallery, with a $30 admission price for non-members and $20 admission price for LASM members.

The afternoon class, designed for individuals ages 14 and above, will have a primary emphasis on color theory. Also led by Mullen, renowned for his vibrant color techniques, students will be guided through his creative process and will receive materials to practice the acrylic “stay wet palette” painting method. With art materials provided by LASM, the afternoon workshop will be from 1 PM – 3 PM in the Soupçon Gallery, with a $55 admission price for non-members and $45 admission price for LASM members.

LASM’s “Studio Saturdays” are supported by a grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council, as administered by the RAC. Funding has also been provided by the National Endowment of the Arts and funded in part by the Alma Lee, Norman and Cary Saurage Fund of the Baton Rouge Area Foundation on behalf of Cary Saurage.
