Landscapes Along the Railway: The Art of John Cleaveland
On View August 16, 2025 Through March 15, 2026
Located in the Soupçon Gallery
Marking the 100th anniversary of the building that now houses LASM, a historic 1925 train station, Landscapes Along the Railway explores themes of journey, motion, and transformation, both past and present.
Throughout history, railways have connected people and places, charting paths of movement, progress, and discovery. These vital networks reflect human innovation and tell the enduring story of our desire to explore, connect, and thrive. From majestic bridges to steel tracks, each route offers a glimpse into how we navigate the landscapes that shape us.
This exhibition features the evocative oil paintings of contemporary artist John Cleaveland. Landscapes Along the Railway captures the spirit of travel across America’s agricultural and natural terrain. Cleaveland’s landscapes are infused with a subtle human presence, evoking stillness, memory, and the passage of time. These elements are not overt but quietly integrated, inviting viewers to reflect on the intersection of human activity and natural environments.
Presented in collaboration with Momentum Gallery and John & Virginia Noland, Landscapes Along the Railway complements LASM’s broader celebration of transportation history.
