Shelf Queens: Model Train Masterpieces
On View August 16, 2025 Through July 5, 2026
Located in the Colonnade Gallery
Model train collecting is more than just a hobby. It is a way to preserve the stories, technology, and artistry of real-world railroads.
Whether displayed on shelves, known by some as “shelf queens,” or running through elaborate layouts, these miniature trains continue to connect people across generations and communities.
From miniature locomotives chugging along intricate tracks to meticulously crafted stations, bridges, and landscapes, model trains have captured the imagination of hobbyists for over a century. What began as a children's toy in the late 1800s quickly evolved into a passion for collectors of all ages.
This display of shelf queens features a selection of hand-picked model train favorites generously loaned by members of the Greater Baton Rouge Model Railroaders Club, a group dedicated to preserving and sharing the tradition of model railroading. Their collections span decades of rail history, showcasing everything from vintage engines to modern, highly detailed replicas.
Take a closer look and let these little locomotives carry you on a journey through time.
